Abortion

When she was a kid

She used to dream of doll houses and kitchens

They remained all dreams.

Time passed by….

Her dreams wanted to flourish

She posed no impediments

And nurtured them instead

Now she envisaged herself

Soaring high over the ocean

With outstretched wings

Far, far, away

To a new, wonderous world

Her dreams continued

But one day sanity got the better of her

Making her realize

All the dreams of hers were to remian

Mere effiigies of unborn realities

And she felt that was the truth

To emancipate herself from the new-found truth

She resorted to aborting them

Killing every inch of her with each abortion

It was agonizing

And she died numerous deaths

Now, where there stood

Her palace of dreams

Is a barren land

Where her thwarted soul

Frantically searches for something

To quench its thirst

Its thirst for yearning, effectuating and relishing

Leading a crucified mother in her –

To often cry for her unborn children

To often ask to herself – ‘Was she justified in this abortion?’

Melancholy

Melancholy enveloped the evening

Took a paper and pen

To give birth to a poem –

Emotions wound its way

To words that fell

Robbing the virginity of the paper

Thoughts ran beserk

Feelings appeared dishevelled

This state continued

And I am left with what you are reading now

Can you call this minute old a poem?

If you can, then you are as preposterous as me!

Sharanyaa’s birthday shopping on 10.01.09

Went to buy a  birthday dress for Sharanyaa. She has been dreaming of buying the frock ever since I bought Shambhavi’s in November. Ernakulam, Kannur, Mookambika & Housewarming 027A girl who loves to be at home, it was indeed an effort when she said she would come with me shopping. We took the metro ..by the time we reached she was hungry..had chole baturea and proceeded on. She fell in love with the first frock she saw …was difficult to make her fall out of love…but I managed and got her a lovely golden frock instead..got matching shoes as well. Reached home late because Sharanyaa wanted to have pink candy…went searching for the hawker …could find him nowhere…ultimately saw the candy in some aunty’s hand…went to ask her where she bought if from…she understood the state i was in and kindly gave the candy to sharnayaa…i heaved a sigh of relief. Finally we reached home. I was anticipating the burst out. It happened when I was making chicken in the kitchen. The shrill was deafening and the volume kept on increasing. Shambhavi was uncontrollable, envy had completely overtaken her. After she had cried for 15 mins, i asked Sharanyaa if she had shown the shoes as well. She replied No. I told her to show them too so that the envy act happens once and for all. It happened. Shambahvi kept crying for an hour. I let her. She had to learn how cope up with jealously. And I should say, she did it well. One hour she suffered, then she came to terms with it. Ranjith was home by then and Shambahvi wore the entire set to show him. I think that was how she decided to kill jealously – experiencing the feeling that actually did not belong to her. It worked because when Sharanyaa also decided to wear and show Ranjith. Shambahvi actually helped her wear it and also kissed her saying that she looked lovely. Wow! that was nice. Hey, Shambhavi just realized that once the dress gets short for Sharanyaa, it is going to be hers. Well, that’s a day ending on a nice, positive note.

Me & Myself!

Seems like me
But they are two different beings
One just the opposite
Carrying both together
Helps me strike a balance, or I believe
Their continuous chatter
Makes me ponder
Will I ever understand Me and the inner Myself?

Circus

Went to a circus
With great hope
The show began
And everyone cheered
In came the acrobats
The jugglers and clowns
They put their act together
Their bodies moved in tandem
As they climbed the tallest ropes
And rode the fastest bikes
The animals did their bit too
The crowd loved the show
Claps rung the air
Everyone was smiling
Except the acrobats, the jugglers and the clowns
Their smiles have long been stolen

Stolen by whom
I could not clearly say
Perhaps by fate
Who made them performers
Or perhaps by us
Who demanded repeat performances
Whatever it be –
Their faces spoke tales of gloom
As if their life was walking towards doom
Their performances seemed forced and compelled too
Is circus worth a visit then?
Aren’t we somewhere robbing off their smiles?
By forcing them to perform
Aren’t we somewhere smiling and cheering at their plight?
Then a small voice said –
Yes, you may be robbing off their smiles
But visit you must
Or else who knows
They may simply cease to exist.

Outlook of Indian economy in the global economic scenario

Recession – the dreaded subject the world is talking about. Be it commodities getting costlier or travelling becoming expensive despite fall in oil prices, pink slips being rampant – the blame is on Recession. Is recession in India actually as bad as it has been made out to be?

Last year as recession dealt heavy blows to the global economy marking an end to an era of cheap money, developed countries slowed down on consumer spending. They also registered huge job losses and investment meltdown. This had an impact on emerging economies like India, where fall in demand led to dip in exports. Forex reserves declined by $56 billion. Rupee depreciated by 20% making exports expensive. Slowdown in foreign investments had adverse effect on liquidity and investments too. The stock indices showed BSE registering a fall of 54.5% at 9,647 from its peak of 21,206 in 2008.

However, despite this economic slowdown, India is expected to do a GDP growth of 6-7% in 2009-10. This is lower than the 9.7% in 2006 and 9% in 2007, but when compared to industrial countries and emerging markets, it is the second highest after China. According to reports by leading venture capitalists, India is holding on well as compared to other emerging countries, especially the other two BRIC nations – Brazil and Russia.

India, being a consumer driven country, has a very big advantage – the large working force. A study by Nomura Research Institute Asian Perspective shows that over 50 crore people are below the age of 30 and those between the age group of 20-59 will grow in next few years to give demographic dividend. These groups will fuel higher demands and growth leading to rise in household incomes, in turn leading to more savings and ultimately to a higher GDP. Currently, household income contributes 68% to the total savings that make up for 38.4% of GDP. This signifies that it will not be long before India recovers from this economic crisis.

A study conducted by AC Nielsen suggests that 83% believe the economy will get better in the next year. Overall, the mood is optimistic but till the time India actually gains back economic momentum, Indians will have to exhibit a certain amount of resilience.

Indo-US relations under Obama administration

When Barack Obama was declared the US President-elect in November, India lauded the victory and exuded confidence that Indo-US relations will scale newer heights.

Looking Back
It was the end of the Cold War that put India in the good books of the US. The relationship started gaining momentum under Bill Clinton and accelerated under George Bush. The signing of the nuclear deal last year took the bilateral relation to its apogee. However, two months after Obama took over the White Office, there are mixed reactions over the relationship.

The K word
One of the biggest concerns is the US intervention in the Kashimr issue, where Obama had hinted on employing Bill Clinton as a special envoy. While India has always maintained it is a bilateral issue and will be resolved without any outside interference, the fact that it is a 60 year old persistent problem does not help. US does not seem very confident that the two countries can amicably resolve it on their own and so will put pressure on India to agree to US intervention. How would India react to it then?

Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)
Obama is likely to pursue the non-proliferation treaty before US aids Indian civilian nuclear facilities. This will put India in a tight spot as the treaty would restrict India from indulging in any nuclear tests. What would India do then?

Outsourcing
India is very worried about Obama’s policies regarding outsourcing. The USD 787 billion stimulus plan which makes it very difficult for US companies to outsource work, or the recent opposition to bring in nurses from other countries to fill the gap in US are doing nothing to ease India’s worries. What is in store for India?

Free Trade
Where will US’s insistence on a free trade agreement with India, where the latter has been opposing the huge subsidies US government has been providing to agriculture, lead to?

These concerns are genuine. In a bid to revive US economy, the Obama administration will get aggressive and take decisions which they feel deem fit. India needs to watch out for every such move, cautiously oppose few if necessary and take decisions accordingly. Meanwhile, US needs to adopt a softer stand. After all, it cannot ignore India’s growth as an economic power and cordial strategic relations with India is bound to mutually benefit both the nations.
